I wiped a tear from my eye, and then some ketchup off my lip. My husband and I toasted as we shifted our oversized leather LaZBoys into the full recline position, legs stretched all the way out. A waiter discretely whisked by to give us some caramel corn. An experience to remember. I was at the new AMC Theater Fork & Screen in Edison, NJ.
I will remember it and hopefully for a long time, because I'm not sure I will return. All of the above I can do at home with a tasty meal I make myself and eat on the couch. This is what I do at home, I like to go out for a different experience.
I will say this upfront - the food was not good. But probably not everyone is as picky as I am. And I only tried one item - a cheeseburger. I thought it was a safe bet. I knew better than to fall for the lobster ravioli pictured on the poster, suggesting I might be at an upscale Italian eatery or on the coast of Maine. I was still in Menlo Park Mall. Needless to say, I do not recommend the burger.
The concept is interesting - for $25 per person you get a movie with a reserved comfortable seat. They apply $10 to the film and $15 of it goes towards food & beverage. If you spend $20 you owe $5. All in all, including a tip it was $65 for the 2 of us, not bad for dinner & a movie. That's what AMC is betting on with their new line of Dine-in Movie Theaters. Plus it solves the problem of how to do dinner & a movie - erasing the debate of whether to eat dinner at 6pm or 10pm from inter-spousal banter.
Sometimes you don't want to eat while watching a movie. Really, who wants to chow down on a burger & fries while watching a rail thin gorgeous ballerina? And on the flip side, there was a lot of blood and puking, not to mention a lot of feathers and crotch grabbing. Not exactly appetizing on a visual level.
It was gimmicky, but really I just want to spend $10 on a movie and have option of getting additional munchies or a soda. Think of all those obnoxious people that fill the seats at the movies. Now add alcohol. They don't even have to get up to order more drinks. And then AMC is putting these people back into the mall, or worse, the parking lots and roads. Of course I'm suggesting none of these obnoxious people will be you. Or me.
Give me a good seat and a bucket of popcorn any day. I'd rather spend the $15 on a good piece of cheesecake after the movie. But if you are curious, I recommend you go ahead and try it out, it was a fun thing to do once.

Black Beans 2 ways: Chicken La Flaca and Beef Chili
I made my first slow cooked meal in a crock pot this week! Actually it was my second effort but the first time it worked. My initial attempt was full of peaking, stirring and tasting, which resulted in a mushy, starchy pot roast. I doubted if crock pots were for me. I like to be busy in the kitchen; they concept of walking away from a meal while it was being prepared was foreign to me.
Then I bumped into my friend L at the market and we chatted about recipes, and Facebook and, well, recipes that we post on Facebook. I told her about another first experience I had with purchasing a brown bag of black beans at Alan's Orchard, which required soaking & cooking. I usually just open a can but I decided to step out a bit and try something new. It was so easy, and I made a delicious chili. I cooked the beans in chicken broth, and added to it browned ground beef, cilantro, chili powder and paprika. Garnished with sour cream & shredded cheddar, the dish turned out to be better than the outcome of the Eagles playoff game.
L asked if I saw the latin chicken recipe she posted, which also included black beans. I hadn't, I must have missed her post that day. I was glad for the real face to face chance encounter, where recipes can be exchanged and discussed in person, the good old fashioned way. The recipe's mix of beans, sweet potatoes, salsa, cilantro and chicken sounded compelling, and colorful, but when I heard that it was a slow cooker recipe, I hesitated.
Next day I'm at Trader Joes where pre-sliced sweet potatoes caught my eye. The next aisle had the salsa. I had the beans and cilantro already, along with a jar of crushed garlic that would make this recipe even more efficient. When I came across a bag of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, it clinched it - I had to make this recipe.
Two mornings later, I was getting ready to leave for work, and I had an extra fifteen minutes. I thought "this is it!" and dusted off my brick red crock pot with the original booklet of instructions still inside. I browned the chicken, layered the ingredients, turned the thing on, and still had time to apply my makeup before leaving the house. I had to substitute smoked paprika and ground ginger for the cumin and allspice, and don't like red peppers so I omitted them. Overall, it was incredibly fast and easy to prepare. Too good to be true? I wondered.
Off to work I went, and with my busy day I completely forgot about my experiment. In fact, I did not have high expectations. But when I walked in my front door 5 hours later, I was greeted with the savory scent of home cooking. In my home, that I prepared, as if it were a long forgotten dream. And most importantly, L was right, this dish is freaking delicious!
I made some basmati rice and fed my family a wholesome meal that I will definitely make again. Black beans are one of the healthiest foods around, not to mention inexpensive. They are packed with protein, fiber, and flavonoid anti-oxidants. They even contain Omega 3 fatty acids! And the sweet potato is an unsurpassed source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A. The chicken was so succulent that it took on a shredded consistency that made me want to wrap it all up in a burrito. The cilantro remained bright green and flavorful, the orange sweet potato played off the black beans, and the paprika gave the whole dish an overall smoky complexion.
If you want to add some heat, add some red pepper flakes and some chopped jalapeno. I forgot to garnish with lime, which I think would have just totally kicked this dish out of the stadium.
I have renamed this dish Chicken La Flaca in honor of my Cuban friends who bestowed the nickname "La Flaca" on me to differentiate me from a different Lauren. La Flaca means the thin one. The other Lauren was pregnant, but I will take a complement where I can find one. At any rate, it sounds a little more exciting than Latin Chicken.
Here's the recipe as posted by L:
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 pounds skinless chicken thighs
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves
- 2 large sweet potatoes, cut into chunks
- 1 red bell pepper, cut into strips
- 2 (15.5 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/4 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves
- 1 cup hot salsa
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 3 large cloves garlic, chopped
- lime wedges, for garnish
Directions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet; season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper. Sprinkle 1/4 cup cilantro over the chicken thighs; brown the chicken in the frying pan, 3 to 5 minutes each side.
- Arrange the chicken in the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the sweet potatoes, red bell pepper, and black beans on top of the chicken. Mix together the chicken broth, 1/4 cup cilantro leaves, salsa, cumin, allspice, and garlic together in a bowl; pour into the slow cooker. Set slow cooker to LOW and cook for 4 hours. Garnish with lime wedges to serve.

Mexican Grille to open in Westfield Leader spot
A classic tale of a national franchise taking out the mom & pop shops.
In the Westfield Leader today, it is announced that Chipotle will take over the Leader Store.
This is big news! Westfield is incredibly lucky to finally have an inexpensive, finger-licking good ol' Mexican joint right in town. Oh wait, we already do. Really close by. Tinga and Qdoba. Together, they adequately and appropriately satisfy the taste buds of those seeking decent Mexican. Or so I thought.....
Is anyone lisenting? Calling Wesfield! You quota so well with the liquor licences. Perhaps you'd consider a quota on things like:
-take out Mexican
-Pizza places
-Italian Delis
-Subs
-Cheeseburgers
how many do we need?!??!
and add some more variety like:
-Greek bistro
-real NYC deli
-smoky bbq
-seafood shack
-smooooooooooothies!
-a real upscale gourmet (truffles, chevre, eggs & shit) brick oven pizza place
Some new markets & restaurants are on the right track by bringing innovative food concepts to Westfield:
-Savory Spice Shop
-Alan's Orchard
-Turning Point
-Wild Greens
and of course there are the great old standbys who serve our foodies well. But c'mon.
I for one am disappointed. I'm bummed the Leader Store closed in the first place. But to have it replace by Chipotle? I am still getting over the departure of Little Treasures. Deep breaths....
be nice

Ask Westfield Foodie: Where to lunch in Westfield
I am regularly asked about my favorite places in Westfield to eat, or to shop for food. Here's a question I got from a friend in Northern NJ, and I thought this exchange would make a great quickie blog post. She posed the same question in a shared email to her Aunt E, who has lived in Westfield for over sixty years. I think together we assembled a great short list for any type of taste buds. Check out this thread and add your own favorites by replying to the post.
D in N. Caldwell: My friends parents need a suggestion for a lunch place in Westfield not too far off parkway. They'll be stopping around your exit at lunch time on a Saturday. Lmk, thanks!
WF: My favorite lunch places are Limani (seafood with a Greek influence and a great make your own salad menu) - and Mojave Grill (Southwestern). There is a Turning Pointe that just opened last month that everyone is raving about but haven't been to personally. Also if they are here after January 12, they can try our newest restaurant that I am very excited about: Wild Greens. They will feature large, chopped salads from a huge menu of pick your own toppings - like D&B when we worked in the city (Ironically it's in the old Cosi spot, our other favorite NYC lunch place!) Asian Fusion has inventive sushi and Feast Catering has great salads, soups & paninis - but both of these are small and seats are not guaranteed. And Clyne & Murphy is still one of my faves, they make a great turkey reuben. There's a place called Xocolatz that everyone loves but I think it's a B+. I"m recommending it because everyone loves to go there, but I have a hard time raving about an upscale salad eatery where the waiter did not know what "red wine vinaigrette" meant. If they want good spicy Thai, try Thailand Restaurant in Clark which is on Central Ave. right off the Parkway.
Aunt E: I would add Vicki's Diner which is filled with old fashioned, old town ambiance. It's just comfort food, great Belgian waffles!
WF: Agreed on Vicki's! I like their tuna melt and they do eggs really well.
Aunt E: Forgot my favorite place for lunch, Xocolatz on Elmer Street, best salads. I love the grilled shrimp with mangos, a sweet dressing salad, sometimes it is not on the menu at lunch but they will make it if you ask, the pecan or other nut coated baked chicken on salad, and they also make a delicious hamburger!
So there you have it! What are your favorite places to lunch in Westfield?
