With all due respect to Bruce Springsteen, New Jersey has a new Boss. You may know Buddy Valastro from his family-run business Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken. Perhaps you watch the reality show Cake Boss on TLC about Carlo’s Bakery and the family dynamics of baking on demand and running a busy bakery shop with his cuckoo for cocoa puffs siblings and in-laws. Or you might have been just a wee bit hooked on the competitive elimination show The Next Great Baker, where in addition to a cash purse the winner also gets a job offer to create at Carlo’s Bakery. For me the answer is D) all of the above. And just the other day, I had the opportunity to meet Buddy. I’d like you to meet The Next Great Businessman.

I was invited to a press conference at the bakery’s new Lackawanna facility to learn about the promotion and to meet Buddy. I jumped at the chance since I am a huge fan and this was a big story for a rookie like myself to cover. Of course my sixth grader begged to come, but I wasn’t sure about pulling her from school. So I did what any concerned mom would do – I put a poll up on Facebook. 100% of my friends agreed that this made school skipworthy. Some actually added compelling testimony, about how educational it will be for them to attend a business presentation, meet a cultural icon and spend the day in Historic Hoboken. That last one was stretching it a bit, like Buddy’s fondant over a Rice Krispie mold resembling a volcano or dinosaur. But with peer support and a free pass, I set off with 2 sixth graders (a fellow truant friend) to hear about a new partnership between Carlo's Bakery and Marriott....
